jake-peavySan Diego Padres’ General Manager Kevin Towers faces the prospect that his most valuable chip may not pitch again until two weeks before the July 31st trade deadline.

Towers announced to the media today, likely nauseated by his own words, that Jake Peavy has been placed on the 15-day DL, fitted with a right ankle cast, due in part to complications from an injury suffered base running against the Chicago Cubs on May 22nd.

Peavy will be reevaluated when the cast is removed, roughly one month from today.  If there are lingering symptoms, or if Peavy requires rehabilitation at the Padres’ minor league affiliates, it will cripple his trade value at the deadline.

For Peavy owners this is tough-luck in two areas—one, the likelihood of a pennant contender making a deal for Peavy is hurt by the injury; and two, he will be out at least 4-6 weeks.

Speculation has mounted that the Padres’ top pitching prospect, Mat Latos, pitching “lights out” at AA San Antonio could join the big club.  In 4 starts, Latos’ line looks like:

22.2 Innings, 3 Wins, 0 Losses, 0.79 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, 2.75 K/BB

Latos should be owned in all Keeper Leagues and warrants a look in traditional Roto/PPA leagues if he joins the Padres rotation.

Latos? Or Inman? I have not heard anything, but would think Inman comes up before Latos.
