Prospect Scouting Reports from Spring Training: Kevin Goldstein (Baseball Prospectus)

If you are a big baseball fan, and odds are if you are reading this you are, you are doing yourself a disservice by not subscribing to Baseball Prospectus.

If you already do, check out Kevin Goldstein’s latest Future Shock for comments made by scouts on top prospects (and others) witnessed this past spring. If not, I’d suggest checking out a monthly subscription if only for Will Carroll’s “Under the Knife” and Kevin’s “Future Shock”…two great on-going features.

Here are some interesting quotes:

travis-sniderTravis Snider

“I was sitting on the Yankees, but the most memorable thing I saw was Snider take Ian Kennedy out of Legends Field in Tampa—one of the longest spring training home runs I’ve ever seen.”

“His performance is very real. He was 94-95 mph, with a nasty mid-80s power slider. When I saw him it was a really dominating performance, and the opponent had no chance.”

“I like everything I see,” said one scout. “He has all five tools, and his instincts for the game could be a sixth. His swing mechanics are outstanding, as he uses the whole field and is compact and direct to the ball. He works the count, is even a good bunter, and knows how to use his speed in the game-I think he could do some big things.”

Pedro Alvarez

“He already has an advanced approach and a very quick bat,” said one talent evaluator. “He’s got a quick trigger, and consistently puts the fat part of the bat on the ball,” he added. “I know he’s starting the year at High-A, but based on what I’ve seen, I’d be shocked if he wasn’t on their 2010 Opening Day roster.”
