Fantasy Baseball Stockwatch: Top Prospects on the Farm (Buster Posey)
Posted by Mike Caprio April 25, 2009
Yesterday we continued our week-long feature on Top Prospects on the Farm, with a 2009 update on the Braves’ pitching prospect Tommy Hanson.
Early next week we will continue to highlight Keeper League GM’s top prospects still on the farm, not named Wieters or Price, how they’ve fared in their early season debuts and what that means to fantasy baseball owners as we get deeper into the season.
Buster Posey, Catcher, San Francisco Giants (KLGM Hitting Prospect #7)
Last season Posey led the Florida State Seminoles to the College World Series for the first time since 2000 completing a season where he won virtually every collegiate award (Johnny Bench Award, Rawlings Gold Glove Award, Player of the Year, Dick Howser Award, 1st team All-American) while leading the NCAA in six offensive categories.
The San Francisco Giants landed Posey in last year’s amateur draft,  after fears of bonus demands caused him to fall to 5th overall.
Posey played in 10 games for the Giants organization after the draft last season, joining Rookie Ball with the AZL Giants, and Short Season with the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes.
His line in those 10 games was:
.351 AVG, 1 HR, 6 RBI, 0 SB, .467 OBP, .622 SLG (1.088 OPS)
Posey started this season with the Hi-A San Jose Giants on a tear. Â In 16 games this season Posey has hit:
.365 AVG, 3 HR, 14 RBI, 1 SB, .459 OBP, .603 SLG (1.063 OPS)
Look for Posey to compete for the Giants’ full-time back-stop job in Spring Training next season. Â He may be called up when rosters expand in September, but shouldn’t see meaningful AB’s in ‘09. Â He projects as a .300 hitter in the majors with 15-20 HR’s annually.
Posey is a must-own in all Keeper Leagues but will not be a factor in traditional Roto/PPA fantasy baseball leagues this season.
