Among the Top Keepers in Baseball

The top pitcher selected in the 2008 MLB Amateur draft, Brian Matusz, made his major league debut yesterday at Comerica Park in Detroit last night—beating the Detroit Tigers, while giving up only 1 run.

The young lefthander struck out 5 Tigers in 5 Innings, topped 94 MPH, and threw first-pitch strikes in 18 of his first 24 batters to secure his first major league win.

With Matusz joining Chris Tillman and Matt Wieters with the big club, it has shown Orioles fans a glimpse of what their future holds.

“I’m not going to lie, I was pretty nervous out there,” said Matusz, who struck out Miguel Cabrera to record his first major league strikeout. “I was definitely a little bit nervous, but once I got that first strike across to that first hitter, I relaxed a little bit.”

It’s unclear whether Matusz will be sent back down when Brad Bergesen returns from the DL, but he will be a mainstay in the rotation next season.

In 8 starts at AA Bowie this season, Matusz’ line was as follows:

46.1 Innings, 7 Wins, 0 Losses, 1.55 ERA, .911 WHIP, 4.18 K/BB (Opp BAA .189)

For those unfamiliar with one of the top pitching prospects in baseball, take a look at our Top Prospects on the Farm: Brian Matusz for a full scouting report.

Matusz is a must-own in all Keeper League formats, and could be an intriguing pick-up for the pitching poor in Roto/PPA leagues looking for a two-week starter.
