Fantasy Baseball Stockwatch: Billy Wagner to be the Closer in Atlanta?

Submitted by Mike Caprio on December 2, 2009 – 9:48 amOne Comment

billy wagnerConsidering Atlanta General Manager Frank Wren offered arbitration to his 2009 Closer-by-committee, Rafael Soriano and Mike Gonzalez this week, it was somewhat surprising when reports surfaced this morning that the Braves had come to terms with former Astros’ and Mets’ closer Billy Wagner on a one year deal.

The strategy for Wren appears to have him coveting the two compensatory 1st round draft picks from teams who sign his former bullpen mates this off-season, while securing insurance for the tail-end of his ‘pen.

Closers emerge from the strangest places (See Ryan Franklin and David Aardsma as exhibits 1 & 2 from last season alone), but having the early beat on one never hurts.  If you happened to have procured the services of Billy Wagner last season and still have him sitting on your roster (as do I), he may be worth a flyer; if not, he may be someone to stash on your “sleeper” board come draft day.
