Today we finish up the analysis of our own pre-season Top 10 2009 Fantasy Baseball Keepers, in case you missed the positional players and prospects, click here.
As part of this analysis, we’ve highlighted surprising performances over the 1st half of the 2009 baseball season at each position.
Here are the pitchers…

The New #1? (Icon Sports Media)
What went right
Actually, quite alot. Â Tim Lincecum, out to prove to the World he’s the greatest pitcher on the planet, has succeeded; Johan and CC have not quite lived up to billing, but have been productive; Â Dan Haren has emerged as a Top 3 Fantasy Starter as we believed he would; while Roy Halladay and King Felix have been nothing short of awesome, and AJ Burnett hasn’t been on the DL once.
What went wrong
Brandon Webb has spent the majority of the season on the shelf and is a legitimate Tommy John Surgery candidate; Jake Peavy missed the trading deadline with a broken ankle that could rob him of the rest of the season; John Lackey spent significant time on the DL for the 2nd season in a row; Carlos Zambrano melted down twice; break-out candidates Jon Lester and Edison Volquez have not lived up to expectations; while Francisco Liriano and Daisuke Matsuzaka have been terrible when they take the mound.
Biggest Surprise
There are a few. Â Zack Greinke has finally arrived; Justin Verlander is back; and Josh Johnson looks like a Cy Young candidate in Miami. Â Some of the other youngsters who are blossoming are Matt Cain, Chad Billingsley, and Yovani Gallardo.

Greatest of All-Time (Icon Sports Media)
What went right
Jonathan Papelbon, Mariano Rivera, Joe Nathan, and F-Rod have all delivered as expected; with Brian Fuentes and Jonathan Broxton surprising most from the great state of California.
.
What went wrong
Joakim Soria, Brad Lidge and Brandon Morrow all spent time on the disabled list, with Morrow “flip-flopping” so much that David Aardsma has become the season’s unlikliest success at closer. Â Carlos Marmol hasn’t even sniffed the closer job, nevermind wrestle the job from Kevin Gregg. Â My notables were a joke, from Arrendondo to Balfour. Â F-minus Caps.
.
Biggest Surprise
Outside of Aardsma, the success of Heath Bell, Huston Street and Ryan Franklin have to be the biggest surprises to me. Â The only one who should creep onto this list next season is Heath Bell.
