As our loyal readers have undoubtedly noticed, we have begun “weaving” Fantasy Football content into our daily baseball focus.

We started because after the NFL draft, Fantasy Football players begin to stir…especially those in Dynasty Leagues.   Memorial Day represented the first major roster deadline in one of my two Fantasy Football Dynasty leagues, (DBFFL).   My other league run by our Fantasy Football guru Joe Buccellato, BEEF, doesn’t begin for another month.

For those who play in a Keeper League in Baseball, taking the leap to a Dynasty league in football should not be a stretch.  For those new to the format overall, it will take some getting used to.

Do you currently play in a Fantasy Football Dynasty League?

Alot of “casual” fantasy sports players love football because it’s relatively low maintenance compared to baseball, basketball and hockey.

Rosters are set each week, and the season is only 16 weeks in most leagues.

What you gain in a Dynasty League is the ability to build a franchise that will live season after season, constructing a team with rookies and veterans with an eye on today, and a vision of tomorrow.

If you are new to Keeper League GM, take a look at one of our first articles on starting a baseball keeper league.

If you are a Keeper League veteran, but new to the idea of Fantasy Football Dynasty Leagues, let me convince you that it’s worth the investment.

The key to beginning a Keeper/Dynasty League revolve around two solid foundations:

1.) Good group of individuals:  Not everyone needs to be best buddies, but in order to build what should be great fun for 3-5+ years, you need committed and respectful owners.

2.) Rules:  Your constitution, as I wrote in our earlier posts on Keeper League Rules, should “serve as the basis for fair and balanced play, with the flexibility to be adjusted based on future events and unforeseen circumstances.  It should provide the basis for parity and serve as the ultimate arbitor of conflict.”  Commissioners’ cannot (and shouldn’t have to) referee each and every dispute in the league.  If your rules are written carefully, many of the questions can be answered in black and white.

Paul Kraemer Jr. who serves as Commissioner for a number of successful Fantasy Baseball Keeper leagues, also serves as the Commissioner for DBFFL and agreed to allow me to post our league constitution.   Paul will be quick to note that these rules have evolved with contributions from all of the DBFFL franchisees and so as they say—Success is the product of many fathers (and mothers).

I will let Joe post his thoughts on BEEF as an alternative rule set and format…but for those looking to get started, pull up a chair and thumb through the rules.

You will have questions and that’s what we are here for…if you are new to IDP (Individual Defensive Players), our next article will make the case for adjusting all of your Fantasy Football leagues to incorporate IDP, whether it’s a dynasty league or not.
