Saves are important in all Fantasy Baseball formats.   As we’ve seen in Colorado, Toronto, Kansas City, and now Texas there are “ordinary” relievers who now have “real value”—many of whom are available on your waiver wire—to your fantasy team.

Here are a few Closer updates:

Scott Downs, Toronto Blue Jays (BJ Ryan)

No doubt that Downs has been picked up in your league by now.  What you may not have known, confirmed last night by Toronto Blue Jays GM JP Ricciardi, is that he will keep the job.  BJ Ryan owners I feel for you.  While BJ is scheduled to return to the Jays it will not be as their closer.

CJ Wilson, Texas Rangers (Frank Francisco)

Wilson served fantasy owners well in 2008 when he saved 24 games in 28 opportunities.  It looks as though Texas Rangers closer Frank Francisco will be placed on the 15-day DL with bicep tendinitis.  If you’re in need of saves, pick-up CJ on a flyer and you may be rewarded.

Juan Cruz, Kansas City Royals (Joakim Soria)

I know I’m late to the party on this one…but I was overseas.  The key here is that Soria has continued shoulder soreness.  While MRI results yesterday proved no structural damage, this could require Soria to miss beyond the minimum.  He’s eligible to return on May 22nd, but I would bet a waiver wire claim that he’s out for a week after that (at least).  If he’s still available he’s worthy of a flyer.

Scott Munter, Colorado Rockies, (?)

Colorado Rockies manager Clint Hurdle must have a Costco-supply of Tums on the bench given his closer situation. Journey man right-hander Scott Munter is the latest to get a save opportunity for the Rockies.  He gave up one walk and one hit in his only inning of work last night, getting his first save of the year.  In no way am I endorsing a pick-up of Munter, but hey…you never know.
